Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to stop various security agencies from further violating human rights in the course of carrying out their duties. He said in a statement on Sunday that this had become necessary in view of the ban by the United States of America on the sale of arms to Nigeria over alleged continued violation of human rights under the Buhari administration. Falana said though the basis for the ban on sale of arms by the US could be queried, the President should stop the violation of people’s rights and also release all political detainees. He specifically urged the President to order the release of the immediate past National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), who has been held in custody without a court order. Falana said the release of Dasuki would allow the ex-NSA’s trial for alleged diversion of arms funds to go on smoothly. He said the government should obey the ruling of the ECOWAS...

India currency bombshell

Image
Watching an Indian news channel I was intrigued to see a newsflash that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was about to address the nation. As I am in Delhi to report on the UK Prime Ministers trade mission to India, I assumed it was an announcement in some way connected to the UK and India's future trade relationship. It was much much bigger than that. The Indian PM announced the withdrawal of 500 (£6.50) and 1,000 (£13) notes from circulation from midnight tonight. Wow. The waiters at the restaurant where i was enjoying a Mutton Rogan Josh were open mouthed in astonishment - but totally supportive. We have too much "black money" in the economy - one told me. According to the chef who emerged from the kitchen to watch the news Mr Modi is doing the right thing - cracking down on an unmanageable, untaxable illegal economy. "Lots of people who come in here pay in bundles of cash that is unknown to the government. It is good what Mr Modi is doing." Caught...

India scraps 500 and 1,000 rupee bank notes overnight

Image
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that the 500 ($7.60) and 1,000 rupee banknotes will be withdrawn from the financial system overnight. The surprise move, announced on Tuesday evening, is part of a crackdown on corruption and illegal cash holdings. Banks will be closed on Wednesday and ATM machines will not be working. India is overwhelmingly a cash economy. New 500 and 2,000 rupee denomination notes will be issued to replace those removed from circulation. "Black money and corruption are the biggest obstacles in eradicating poverty," Mr Modi said. People will be able to exchange their old notes for new ones at banks over the next 50 days but they will no longer be legal tender. The announcement prompted people across the country to rush to ATMs that offer 100 rupee notes in an attempt not to be left without cash over the next few days.

I hope that he will be a successful president for all Americans. This is not the outcome we wanted or we worked so hard for, and I’m sorry we did not win this election for the values we share and the vision we hold for our country. “But I feel pride and gratitude for this wonderful campaign that we built together. This vast, diverse, creative, energized campaign. You represent the best of America, and being your candidate has been one of the greatest honours of my life. “I know how disappointed you feel, because I feel it too. A...

Go after MMM promoters, Reps tell EFCC, CBN

Image
The House of Representatives on Wednesday asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Central Bank of Nigeria to immediately go after the promoters of the Mavrodi Mondial Moneybox, otherwise known as MMM, in Nigeria. Lawmakers strongly opposed the investment scheme, which has lately gained popularity among Nigerians in the wake of the current economic recession in the country. The MMM promises 30 per cent return on investment for any money put into the scheme for 30 days. The investment scheme has a Russian origin and “involves directing clients to make money available for an anonymous person with a promise of 30 per cent return within one month.”  But, members of the House described the scheme as a scam and warned Nigerians not to be carried away by the mouth-watering returns on investment that it promised. Lawmakers warned that the trick being used by the operators was to attract as many Nigerians as possible to invest substantial amounts of money befo...
